Gnathology

Dealing with the study and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunctions and relationships between the dental arches, gnathology is a key branch of dentistry. It is aimed at those who experience symptoms such as jaw pain, creaking during jaw movement or limitations in opening the mouth. Gnathology is designed to diagnose and correct these problems to improve patients’ oral health and quality of life.

The role of gnathology

Gnathology consists of several stages of diagnosis and treatment. Initially, we perform an indepth analysis of the occlusion, assessing the mandibular posture and the correct relationship between the dental arches. Using advanced instruments, we are able to identify any dysfunctions or disorders of the TMJ. We then develop a customised treatment plan that may include re-education therapies, occlusal devices or corrective interventions. Gnathology not only aims to resolve obvious symptoms, but also to prevent future relapses by ensuring better function of the joint and the masticatory system..

Long-term benefits of gnathology

In addition to correcting immediate problems, gnathology offers long-term benefits for the patient’s dental and general health. Proper management of TMJ dysfunction not only relieves pain and improves chewing function, but also helps prevent damage to teeth, muscles and surrounding structures.
